In this tutorial you will learn how to install a plugin and use it in order to obtain an animation with an image reflected on the surface of the water.

  1. First of all, you will need to download a plugin, called Almathera Puddle. You can get it here.
Unzip it. Then, copy the Almathera folder in the Plug-ins folder, where you have Photoshop installed. For example:  Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\

  2. Once you’ve installed the plugin, open in Photoshop the desired image. You can use this one, for example.

Open Photoshop and from the top menu: File – Open – select the photo – Open.

  3. Now you’ll need to add the animation in the bottom of the photo, so you’ll need some extra space.
Image – Canvas – Size – Check the up arrow and change the height to 450 px – OK.

  4. Choose Rectangular Marquee Tool (be careful with the Feather value, it must be set to 0 px) and select the part that will reflect.

  5. Press CTRL + D to deselect.
CTRL + J ten times to make 10 copies of the layer with the photo.

  6. Using Rectangular Marquee Tool , select the white part and a bit of the colored one.

  7. Having the selection active: Filter – Almathera – A Puddle: let the default settings, only change Scale to 70.

  8. Select the next layer (lower – Layer 1 copy 7) and with the selection active: Filter – Almathera – A Puddle and change Scale to 72 (+2)

You probably won’t notice the differences, because of the covered layer, but in the end you will surely notice them.

  9. Same with the rest of the layers, change Scale by adding 2.
After you’ve applied the effect on all the layers, press CTRL + D to deselect.

  10. Open the Animations panel: Window – Animation.
Set the animation to repeat forever.

  11. Now create from every layer a frame for animation.

  12. Select all the frames and change the time in each every frame will be played.

  13. Choose a frame, click on the black triangle from lower right and select 0.1 seconds.

Eventually, you can press Play to preview the image.

  14. Save: File – Save for Web & Devices – from lower right select: Preset: Gif 128 Diterhed – Save – select location – OK.

And this is how you animation should look like:
