I know it’s not the best time of the year for this tutorial, but here it goes :) You will learn how to create a snowman.

  1. First of all, open a new document – File – New – Width: 600/ Height: 450 – OK.

  2. Select Gradient Tool (or press G) – make a gradient from bright blue to white – and from bottom to top, with holding SHIFT, trace the gradient.

  3. Now we will create the snow on which we’ll put the snowman.
    Create a new layer – Layer – New – Layer – OK.

  4. From the upper menu (having the color black selected) : Filter – Render – Clouds.

  5. Press CTRL + T to shrink the image.

  6. Image – Adjustment – Hue/Saturation or press CTRL + U change like this:
    Check Colorize from lower right and add the following values:

  7. Because the snow is not uniform, select Erase Tool . Right Click in the scene and add to Master Diameter the value 70 and at Hardness, 75% and we try to erase like this:

  8. Now we will draw the snowman. Create a new layer: Layer – New – Layer – OK.
    Select the Elipse Tool, hold SHIFT and add a circle in the scene.

  9. Right click on the layer with the circle – Blending Options – check Gradient Overlay and apply the following settings:
    -check Reverse
    -Style – Radial
    -angle: 45 degrees
    -Scale – 150%
     

    Then click on the rectangle after gradient – double click on the black arrow from bottom left and select the color grey (#bababa) – OK.

  10. Before exiting Blending Options, having clicked on Gradient Overlay, we go with the cursor on the circle, in the scene and move the gradient a bit to upper left.

  11. Now we add the head of the snowman. Right click on the layer with the first circle – Duplicate Layer .. – OK.

  12. Press CTRL + T and from top change W: 80%, H:80%.

  13. Select Move Tool (or press V) and with SHIFT pressed, move the circle down.

  14. Now we add a scarf to the snowman.
    Create a new layer: Layer – New – Layer
    Select Brush Tool (or press B) with the following settings:

  15. Zoom once (CTRL + “+”) and try to draw something similar.

  16. Select the Eliptical Marquee Tool and make a selection until you reach the half of the scarf.

  17. Select Burn Tool (right click in the scene: size 25 px / hardness: 0%) and apply it on the bottom side on the edge of the selection for a shadow effect.

  18. Press CTRL + D to deselect and after this, apply the same effect on the bottom side and on the sides.

  19. Add a new layer – Layer – New – Layer – OK. Select the color black, Brush Tool and draw the eyes and buttons like in the following image.

  20. Right click on the new layer – Blending Options – check Drop Shadow and add the following settings:

  21. Create a new layer, then zoom in twice – CTRL + “+”, select Polygonal Lasso Tool and make a selection with the form of an carrot.

  22. Right click inside the selection – Fill.. – Use – Color – select a shade of orange – OK – OK
    Again, Right click in the inside of the nose – Stroke – OK.
    CTRL + D to deselect.

  23. Apply a filter: Filter – Distort – Glass – OK.

  24. Select the layer under the one with the nose and create another one above: Layer – New – Layer – OK.
    Select Polygonal Lasso Tool- make a similar selection .

  25. Now, just like the previous step, right click inside of the selection – Fill – Use and select Color.. (even though it might be already selected) – for the color use a light grey (#dcdcdc) – OK.
    CTRL + D to deselect.

  26. Create a new layer – Layer – New – Layer.
    Select Brush Tool with the following settings and draw the mouth of the snowman.
     

  27. Add a new layer: Layer – New – Layer.
    Select Rounded Rectangle Tool – from the top, from Radius, put: 10 px, and draw a hat – 2 rectangles (with space pressed, you can move the rectangle)
     

  28. Press CTRL + T and from the corners, spin the hat and then move it a bit to fit on the head of the snowman.
     

  29. Select the layer with the snowball, from bottom, probably called Layer 2, then Erase Tool with the following settings and erase a bit from the bottom to make it look like it’s in the snow.
     

  30. Here’s the final result. I’ve added a few snowflakes too (I’m going to show you how to make them in another tutorial.)
