Voiding a check is common and there are many reasons why a person may void a check. Perhaps you made a mistake in writing when you were writing the check. Maybe the check was returned to you for whatever reason and you no longer need it. Whatever the reason, you’ll need to void the check. Voiding a check is simple, follow these steps.

How To Void A Check

  1. Most people just write VOID in large letters across the check, in the center (see picture above). This is sufficient to void the check. However, you may want to be more precise. If so, follow the next steps.

  2. Write “void” in the dollar amount box. A bank teller looks at this location for the dollar amount first. They will see VOID there and know the check is invalid.

  3. Write “void” across the signature line. Without a valid signature, the check can’t be cashed and “void” there will alert the teller.

  4. Write “void” in large letters across the back of the check. This is just an additional step to make sure the check is void.

  5. Some banks allow you to cancel a check either online for via phone. You can call and cancel the check using the check number. This ensures that your bank will not cash the check, regardless of any void text on the check. Bank of America is one such bank that will allow you to cancel checks online. This is also called a stop-payment.

  6. Make sure you record that you have voided the with the check number in your checkbook

  7. Finally, for ultimate security, shred the check into as many pieces as possible.
